Christie Week 2009 : 13th - 20th September
Join us and celebrate the Queen of Crime in this year's Agatha Christie Week. Highlights include new radio productions; unpublished short stories; plays and debates. And of course we'll be reading and discussing Murder on the Orient Express in the book club.
New events will appear on the events page - so do keep checking.
So how will you be celebrating Christie Week?
The Southbank Centre
In London, watch best-selling authors and die-hard Christie fans Kate Mosse, Val McDermid, and Jasper Fforde debate her work and discuss their favourite Christie novels. Hear them share extracts from their favourite work and ask questions about their love of Christie. 16th September, 7.45pm, Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London (£7.50)
Or, indulge your passion for Christie at The Southbank Book Club. Discuss Murder on the Orient Express, published 75 years ago, with other fans. 14th September, 6.30pm, Spirit Level, Royal Festival Hall, London. (Admission is free).
The Agatha Christie Festival
Visit the annual Agatha Christie Festival on the English Riviera. Over 40 events will take place including plays, open-air cinema screenings, tea-dances, lectures and murder mystery dinners. Download a full brochure here. 13th – 20th September, English Riviera.
Murder on Air
The Agatha Christie Theatre Company present Murder on Air. Hear Christie’s gripping radio thrillers, performed in an authentic studio setting in the style of the original BBC 1930’s broadcast. 10th to 12th September, Hexagon Theatre, Reading. To book tickets, click here.
If you’re in Torquay during Christie Week, the radio plays will be performed as part of a celebratory dinner hosted by Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie’s grandson. Listen to Personal Call and Butter in a Lordly Dish, in the glamorous setting of the Imperial Hotel. 13th September, Imperial Hotel, Torquay, (£40). (01803 211211).
Greenway House
Visitors to Torquay can take a boat up the River Dart to visit the newly opened holiday home of Agatha Christie. Lovingly restored by The National Trust Greenway House is a must see for all fans. Prior booking is essential.
Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks
Agatha Christie’s recently discovered notebooks are a treasure trove for any fan. John Curran’s book, Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks also contain two unpublished Christie stories. Out in stores on the 3rd September, the books provide a fascinating insight into her writing. Buy it here.
BBC Radio 4
Listen to a new series of afternoon readings on BBC Radio 4 – Agatha Christie’s Mysterious Mr Quin. Christie’s favourite character, Harley Quin, makes his BBC radio debut. The Coming of Mr Quin, The Soul of the Croupier and At The Bells and Motley will be aired over 3 days in Christie Week and are read by Martin Jarvis.
And on 12 September, BBC Radio 4’s Archive Hour features Agatha Christie’s Life in Her Words. More information to follow.
The Orient Express
To coincide with the 75th anniversary of the publication of Murder on the Orient Express, fans can enjoy a journey of mystery and intrigue. Step back in time aboard the British Pullman carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express on Saturday 12 September. Actors in period costume are on board setting the scene for a murder. Throckmorton Literary Festival
Listen to Laura Thompson, avid Christie expert and author of Agatha Christie: An English Mystery.
